Joseph Smolen is an Executive Vice Chairman at Newmark, serving as a national leader within the firm’s multifamily investment sales platform. With 20 years of experience in the real estate industry, he has advised on more than $100 billion in multifamily transactions, including single-asset and large-scale portfolio equity sales.
In his current role, Smolen specializes in strategic dispositions throughout the Western United States, as well as portfolio sales, recapitalizations, corporate transactions, and joint venture executions for geographically diverse national portfolios. He also plays an active role on Newmark’s Multifamily Advisory Council.
Prior to joining Newmark, Smolen was Managing Director at Eastdil Secured, overseeing the firm’s multifamily advisory practice across the Western U.S. Earlier in his career, he was a founding member of Institutional Property Advisors, focused on multifamily transactions throughout Southern California. He also served as a partner and global head of business development at a cleantech private equity fund.

Education
Smolen graduated from Harvard University, where he earned a BA in Sociology and holds an MBA from INSEAD.
