Michael Burden is an Executive Managing Director of ExcessSpace Retail Services, Inc. (“Excess Space”), a Newmark company. Excess Space focuses its business model on portfolio optimization for retail and restaurant companies throughout North America. In particular, Excess Space implements formal lease renewal, lease restructuring and disposition programs on behalf of national retailers and restaurant chains. Michael brings over 25 years of real estate experience concentrated within the retail sector. Over the past 15 years, his primary focus has been on marketing, branding and business development, as well as corporate strategic planning and initiatives.
Prior to 2005, Michael served as the Director of Lease Restructuring Services for Excess Space. In this role, his responsibilities included formulating and implementing the process and procedures for the lease restructuring business model that is widely considered one of the most sophisticated in the retail industry. Moreover, he implemented dozens of custom-tailored best-in-class surplus property disposition programs that have generated well over $1 Billion in savings for retailers.
Prior to joining Excess Space, Michael worked with a prominent consulting firm that specialized in retailer bankruptcy and turnaround management.
Michael is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers where he attends over a dozen conferences a year and participates on various panels. Similarly, he is actively involved in the development of the next generation of real estate professionals by speaking on panels and teaching classes for the National Retail Tenants Association and other industry organizations.

Education
Michael graduated from Hofstra University School of Law, where he obtained a Juris Doctorate and received a B.S. in Business Management from the University of Buffalo.
